Access Rights

The ability to edit a web page or part of a web page.

ADA Section 508 Compliance

Compliance with ADA Section 508, which specifies text descriptions of graphic elements that may not be viewable by certain persons.

Audit Trail

List of actions with person, date and time noted.

Bottleneck

Delay caused by numerous website additions and updates being sent to the webmaster for placement on the web.

Brand Integrity

The characteristic look, feel, and persona of a website are maintained.

Browser-Based

All web CMS editing and administration is done via a browser accessing a web page. No other software components, other than a standard browser, are required.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

A specification of the formatting style for various elements of a web page.

Chat

Online web-based text messaging, usually in real-time between two or more users.

Check-In/Check-Out

Access control where a page currently being edited is checked out and not available for others to edit. The page is checked in upon cancellation of the edit or publishing of the page.

Direct Edit from Web Page

The ability to access the web CMS editor from a (usually hidden) link on any web page and immediately edit the page without requiring users to find their pages in the web CMS directory.

Editable Regions

Sub parts of a web page that are deemed accessible and editable by a particular content editor.

File Management

The ability to perform standard file functions within the web CMS such as copy, move, rename, delete, etc.

Friendly URL

The URL designator for a web page that is composed of human readable text, as opposed to unintelligible strings of characters, usually with meaning only in a database structure.

Granular Control

Control access that can be refined to particular and even small parts of a web page for editing or applied to the selection of particular editing tools.

Group Management

Sets up groups such that membership in a group allows users certain access and editing tool privileges.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

The standard markup language used on the Web to apply formatting to text.

In-Context Editing

The ability to edit a web page in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) manner. The actual web page is displayed during editing as opposed to a lesser text field element.

Insert Media

The web CMS capability to insert graphics, audio, video and other multi-media types.

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)

Used to simplify the maintenance of user login information for multiple services. Active Directory uses the LDAP protocols and is often used synonymously with LDAP.

Multi-Browser Preview

The ability to display a preview of a web page in different browsers and different platforms before publishing.

Multi-Browser Support

The ability to access a web CMS and edit web pages through any number of popular browsers.

Multiple Operating Systems Support

The ability to operate a web CMS in the browser application that can be run on any number of operating systems (e.g. Windows, Macintosh, Linux, etc.).

Presentation Consistency

The maintenance of a desired presentation across the pages of a website. Usually effected via CSS or XSL techniques.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

A format that allows users to pull new content for viewing upon request.

Repurposing Content

The breaking down of content into appropriate sized chunks so that the content can be combined and re-used in various situations and formats.

Schedule Content

The publishing of a web page through a web CMS at a particular time or removing and replacing content at a certain time with a special redirection or notice.

The ability to index and offer a look-up search field to find pages on the website that match the search criteria.

Separate Content and Design

A modern, best practice website design approach where the page content is maintained separately from the manner in which the page is to be formatted and displayed.

Single Sign-on

The ability to access any number of applications using one sign-on event.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

A modern software deployment approach where the application runs on the vendor's servers and all customer use is via a web browser.

Tagging

The inclusion of tags that are used to specify certain actions to a web CMS.

Templates

Structured documents that indicate how text will conform to a specified format.

Track Content Changes

The ability of a web CMS to determine the difference between two succeeding versions of a web page.

Version Control and Rollback

The ability of a web CMS to store different versions of a website at given times and roll back the pages to be displayed to a previous version.

What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG)

An editing approach supported by web CMS that enables the user to view and edit content in context of the entire page.

Workflow

A web CMS requirement that allows certain tasks to be done in a specified manner, subject to certain approvals.
