Announcing the 2015 Gadget Challenge Winners

2015 Gadget ChallengeOur 2015 Gadget Challenge resulted in a myriad of practical, creative, and incredible ideas. For those who are unfamiliar with our Gadget Challenge, contestants had the opportunity to submit ideas or code for gadgets that would be helpful to fellow OU Campus users. They competed for a free pass to the highly anticipated 2016 OmniUpdate User Training Conference. The quality of submissions this year was most impressive!

The votes are in, the committee’s deliberation is complete, and we are ready to announce the winners. Drumroll please….

Winning Gadget Idea: Expanded Page Info
By Patrick O'Gorman, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

The purpose of the gadget is to provide information about who manages a particular page. When viewing a page, the gadget will display what group has access to that page. Users can drill down to view the members of that group, as well as each person's level of access to that page. They will also be able to see who the approver is. With quick access to this information, users can easily determine who to contact with questions regarding a particular page.

Winning Working Gadget: Page Comments
By Nicholas Raia, Farmingdale State College

The purpose of this gadget is to better facilitate collaborative work by allowing users to leave comments and feedback for one another on pages. Rather than trying to collaborate over email, which often becomes disorganized, comments can be viewed directly alongside the page they are referring to. The gadget resides in the sidebar, but only appears when you are previewing or editing a page. When the gadget is expanded, comments left by other users on that page are displayed in order from newest to oldest. Above the comments is a text area and corresponding “submit” button, allowing users to leave comments of their own on the page. Once a comment is left, the comments list is updated to show the new comment.

Thanks to all who submitted to the challenge. Don’t remove those thinking caps just yet – Our 2016 Gadget Challenge will be here before you know it! And stay tuned for upcoming blog posts where we will have a Q&A with Patrick and Nicholas to get insights behind their gadgets!
