Camarillo Tech Firm Leads Website Coding Workshop at Its Headquarters to Encourage Middle School Aged Girls to Pursue Careers in Technology and Reduce the Gender Gap
Camarillo, CA—June 30, 2016—OmniUpdate, the leading web content management system and digital marketing solutions provider for higher education, hosted its first ever TechGirlz workshop event at its headquarters in Camarillo on Friday, June 24, 2016. OmniUpdate partnered with TechGirlz to bring their hands-on workshops to the community and spark girls’ interest in the tech industry. This partnership began in 2015 at the annual OmniUpdate User Training Conference.
TechGirlz is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to close the gender gap in technology occupations. The organization offers free hands-on workshops for middle school aged girls, empowering and inspiring them to be future technology leaders.
Fifteen girls aged 9-14 attended OmniUpdate’s free TechGirlz workshop to learn elements of HTML and CSS for creating a website. The workshop was run by female OmniUpdate employees using TechShopz in a Box™—free teaching materials offered by TechGirlz to allow their workshops to be run by anyone, anywhere.

“The girls had fun and were engaged in learning the steps to creating a website,” said Breanna Scott, Customer Training Manager at OmniUpdate. “The workshop was led by female role models in the tech industry who had a positive influence on the girls.”

Workshop attendees also received a tour of the OmniUpdate headquarters, where they got to see front- and back-end web developers in action. “The whole experience was an invaluable opportunity for these young girls to get a glimpse of what a career in technology could look like,” said OmniUpdate President and CEO, Lance Merker. “With TechShopz, OmniUpdate aims to expose more females to technology-related occupations and break the stereotype that tech and computer science jobs are just for men.”
OmniUpdate benefits from the Camarillo community in numerous ways, including the growth of its employee base from local graduates. By educating Camarillo’s youth on website development, OmniUpdate is providing an early foundation for this reciprocity.
