Study on Digital Transformation in Higher Education Uncovers Time-Sensitive Need for Institutions to Adapt to Students' Digital Expectations on the Web

A New Study Conducted by Digital Clarity Group (DCG) Tracks Digital Disruption in the Age of the Empowered Consumer, Its Impact on Institutions of Higher Learning, and How These Institutions Are Responding to It

Camarillo, CAMarch 31, 2016—A new study co-sponsored by OmniUpdate, the leading web content management system (CMS) and digital marketing solutions provider for higher education, investigates the digital transformation of higher education institutions from a 360° perspective. It includes research on higher education institutions in the US and UK, as well as various technology vendors and solutions providers. The 2016 Digital Clarity Group (DCG) report, titled Digital Transformation in Higher Education: How Content Management Technologies and Practices Are Evolving in the Era of Experience Management, determines that as current and prospective students' digital expectations rise rapidly, so does the need for institutions to step up the pace of transformation.

The complete study published by DCG, a research-driven advisory firm, is available on OmniUpdate's website as a free download for the 60,000 college and university web professionals using OmniUpdate's CMS, OU Campus™, as well as anyone else interested in the findings.

The report finds that employing more advanced applications of digital content, technologies, and practices is essential for the vitality of colleges and universities. At the same time, it indicates that service providers with expertise in these digital capabilities are largely underused and undervalued in the higher education realm. The study accredits this phenomenon to the unique challenges higher education institutions face, as outlined in the report. Nonetheless, the report emphasizes that digital transformation in higher education is not only crucial, but time-sensitive.

According to the report, "The tipping point—the time at which a change or an effect cannot be stopped—will occur when a higher education institution's inability to meet the digital expectations of today's education customers affects the quantity and quality of students enrolling in their programs. Once this happens, universities will be playing catch-up with leaders who have been willing to make bold investments."

"This report contains vital information for the decision makers within higher education institutions," said Jason Taylor, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for OmniUpdate. "It's a call to action for colleges and universities to pay attention to their digital presence, because if they fall too far behind the competition, it could have a substantial impact on their institution and make it difficult and costly to get back into the race for students."

The study identified significant challenges faced by higher education institutions, including the tremendous amount of content to be managed across numerous websites, the absence of systematic management, limited resources, and inconsistent funding. Findings from the study include:

  • Many colleges and universities are sorely lacking in website and content governance, as web teams are under-resourced for their content workloads.
  • Workflow management is almost nonexistent as a regular practice for many institutions' websites, resulting in publishing delays, bottlenecks, and content that is out of date, inaccurate, and contradictory.
  • Higher education institutions desire a streamlined way to make publishing content as simple as possible with as little training as possible.
  • Vertical market solutions are a fitting choice for institutions in need of foundational content management capabilities fine-tuned for higher education.

Higher education leaders can apply the information from this research and make informed choices about what their institutions' digital goals should be and what path they will take to achieve them.
