Career College Central recently asked us about big web trends for colleges in 2014. This is a hot topic across higher ed, as educational institutions are being buffeted by rapid changes in technology that are transforming the way we work and communicate.
Since more than 700 college and university websites in the U.S. and around the world use OU Campus™ as their web content management system (CMS), OmniUpdate was a good match to talk about how institutions can keep up with these changes.
Using examples from higher ed customers across the country, we identified three big trends for adapting to today's web users:
- Rise of the mobile user
When the team at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania found that their "website analytics showed that adult learners are more likely than [their] traditional students to visit [their] website from mobile devices," they decided to make their School of Continuing and Professional Studies website responsive. We hear stories like this from our customers all the time.
- Library services in the digital age
Tracy Medley, Head of Discovery and Web Development at The University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library, built an "Ask the Library" widget through OU Campus to better service changing styles of library interactions. "Some people just don't want to talk on the phone," said Tracy. Just one of many examples of how libraries are adapting to change.
- Today's college website: One brand
Western Kentucky University (WKU) talks through how they went from "730 different websites that all looked different," to consistent WKU-branded templates and a single web CMS for the entire institution. This has become a major initiative for many of our customers.
