Managing a College Website with a One - Person Team: OU Campus Makes It Possible
The feature-rich OU Campus empowers a one-man technology shop to manage 136 content contributors across campus.
OU Campus makes it easy to structure website architecture in a way that makes it intuitive and easy to find information.
Accessibility is no longer an afterthought, but built in to the website review process.
Tim Demeter had a problem. When he started his new job as digital marketing specialist at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he quickly learned that being a one-man shop made it almost impossible to oversee his school’s website and manage other marketing projects at the same time.
Alverno College, one of the nation’s largest Catholic women’s colleges, was recently named the “most innovative school in Wisconsin” by U.S. News and World Report. Located in Milwaukee, the school has 2,017 students and offers undergraduate, graduate, and flexible adult evening and online programs.
To complicate matters, Alverno had switched from their antiquated TERMINALFOUR content management system (CMS) to OU Campus, and Tim was constantly having to dig through the old site to extract information.
The following case study outlines how OU Campus solved Alverno College’s problems by making it possible to:
- Manage the school’s digital presence with only one staff member.
- Train users campus-wide in 30 minutes or less to create and edit content.
- Empower content contributors, freeing his time for other marketing projects.
- Capitalize on OmniUpdate’s full customer support—a big benefit for a small school with limited resources.
OU Campus makes it easy to design a well-structured architecture and workflow.
Even though he was new in his role, Tim jumped straight into the migration of Alverno’s website, working closely with OmniUpdate’s Customer Success team to develop the website’s structure and implementation plan. “It took me about six weeks to really understand the website, and the OU support team was super helpful,” Tim said. A speedy implementation was imperative because Tim knew that no one else would be able to work on the website until implementation was complete.
“Without OU Campus, it would be impossible for me, as a one-man shop, to manage this leviathan of a site on my own,” Tim said. “In the past, I’ve had to go into our old TERMINALFOUR site to find things. If I had still been using that CMS when I started, I probably would have run for the hills. It is completely unintuitive—it would have driven me insane.”
Result: Tim can easily structure his website’s architecture in a way that makes it intuitive and easy to find information.
OU Campus is easy to use.
Simultaneously, Tim began training contributors across campus to manage their own web pages. OU Campus is flexible and intuitive so that users can be ready to edit without a lot of training—a real benefit since employee turnover means that Tim is constantly adding new contributors. “New users with basic computer skills can jump right in—if you know Word, you can figure out OU Campus in a few minutes,” Tim said. “And because of its flexibility, power users have more complex tools at their fingertips to make the design changes they need.”
Result: Because Tim can train users with ease, he can bring content contributors up to speed as fast as possible.

OU Campus empowers content contributors, freeing administrators’ time for other projects.
Because OU Campus is designed with higher ed in mind, Tim found that it wasn’t a problem for 136 users to be signed in to the system at any given time. “Most CMSs are built for a core team of editors—they just aren’t flexible enough to deal with 136 people playing around in it at the same time,” he said. “OU Campus is built with faculty and staff users in mind, and its features are hyper-relevant to the things we do in higher education.”
Tim also appreciates that OU Campus makes it simple for low-tech users to make text and picture changes instantly. Empowering his users freed up Tim’s time so that he could complete several inherited projects.
Result: Because OU Campus is as easy to use as Word, Tim can train new users to create and edit content within 30 minutes.

OU Campus reviews your website for accessibility issues.
Of the many features of OU Campus, Tim’s favorite is the Final Check accessibility tool which has been instrumental in cleaning up legacy pages. “We migrated directly from TERMINALFOUR into OU Campus and didn’t address accessibility at the time,” he said. “Now I can set parameters and have pages reviewed for accessibility,” a crucial feature that helps Alverno stay compliant with WCAG 2.1 standards.
Result: Accessibility is no longer an afterthought, but built in to the website review process.
OU Campus has the best customer support in the business—a big benefit for small schools with limited resources.
Learning OU Campus has been easy for Tim, and over time, he has built his knowledge and confidence to make more complicated changes on his own. When he does encounter a problem, he can get his answer quickly from the OmniUpdate Community Network (OCN), detailed technical documentation, or OmniUpdate’s award-winning Customer Success team. Together, the customer support provided to OU Campus users is a big benefit for small schools with limited resources.
Result: Tim is never on his own. Several support options are available when needed, and Tim has a friendly, comprehensive customer service partner as part of Alverno’s tech team—an invaluable benefit for a small school with limited resources.
Above all, Tim values how OmniUpdate’s Customer Success team takes the time to explain the problem and then walks him through to the solution. “Having OmniUpdate’s customer support as part of our team is invaluable for a small school with limited resources,” Tim said. “I’d even walk to their headquarters in California to do this case study if it meant helping other schools understand how truly outstanding OmniUpdate’s customer service really is.”
